A roofing is part of the building envelope. It is the covering on the uppermost part of any building or shelter which provides protection from pets or animals and weather, rain or snow notably, but also heat, wind and sunlight. The word denotes the framing or structure which helps that covering also.[1]The characteristics of your roof are dependent upon the purpose of the building so it covers, the available roofer materials and the local traditions of engineering and wider principles of architectural design and practice and may also be governed by local or national legislation. In most countries a roof protects against rain primarily. A verandah may be roofed with material that protects against sunlight but admits the other elements. The roof of the garden conservatory protects plants from cold, wind, and rain, but admits light.

In lots of elements of the global world ceramic tiles have been the predominant roof covering material for centuries, if not millennia. Other roof covering materials include asphalt, coal tar pitch, EPDM plastic, Hypalon, polyurethane foam, PVC, slate, Teflon textile, TPO, and hardwood shakes and shingles.
The construction of a roof depends upon its approach to support and the way the underneath space is bridged and whether or not the roof is pitched. The pitch is the perspective at which the roof goes up from its most affordable to highest point. Most US home structures, except in very dried out regions, has roofs that are sloped, or pitched. Although modern engineering elements such as drainpipes may remove the need for pitch, roofs are pitched for reasons of looks and traditions. So the pitch is partly dependent upon stylistic factors, and partially to do with practicalities.
Some types of roof, for example thatch, need a steep pitch to become waterproof and durable. Other types of roofing, for example pantiles, are unstable on the steeply pitched roof but provide excellent weather protection at a comparatively low angle. In regions where there is little rainfall, an almost smooth roof with a slight run-off provides enough protection against an occasional downpour. Drainpipes also remove the dependence on a sloping rooftop.
A person that specializes in roof structure construction is called a roofer.The durability of a roof structure is a matter of concern because the rooftop is often the least accessible part of an building for purposes of repair and renewal, while its devastation or destruction can have serious results.
Because the reason for a roofing is to protect people and their possessions from climatic elements, the insulating properties of any roofing are a awareness in its composition and the decision of roofing materials.Some roofing materials, those of natural fibrous materials specifically, such as thatch, have excellent insulating properties. For all those that not, extra insulation is often installed under the outside part. In developed countries, nearly all dwellings have a ceiling installed under the structural members of the roof. The purpose of a ceiling is to insulate against temperature and cold, noise, mud and frequently from the lice and droppings of birds who frequently choose roofs as nesting places.
Cement tiles can be utilized as insulation. When installed giving a space between your tiles and the roof surface, it can reduce heating caused by sunlight.Forms of insulation are felt or clear plastic sheeting, with a reflective surface sometimes, installed below the tiles or other materials immediately; synthetic foam batting laid above the ceiling and recycled paper products and other such materials that can be inserted or sprayed into roof cavities. So called Cool roofs have become progressively more popular, and in some instances are mandated by local codes. Cool roofs are thought as roofs with both high reflectivity and high thermal emittance.
Poorly insulated and ventilated roofer can suffer from problems including the formation of snow dams surrounding the overhanging eaves in winter, causing normal water from melted snow on higher parts of the roof covering to penetrate the roofing materials. Ice dams happen when temperature escapes through the uppermost part of the roof, and the snow at those true factors melts, refreezing as it drips over the shingles, and collecting in the form of ice at the lower points. This can result in structural harm from stress, like the devastation of drainage and gutter systems.
