A roof structure is part of the building envelope. Poorly insulated and ventilated roof covering can have problems with problems like the formation of glaciers dams across the overhanging eaves in cold weather, causing drinking water from melted snow on higher parts of the roof covering to permeate the roofing material. Ice dams occur when high temperature escapes through the uppermost area of the roof, and the snow at those true things melts, refreezing as it drips over the shingles, and collecting in the form of ice at the low points. This can bring about structural harm from stress, including the devastation of gutter and drainage systems.
