A roof covering is part of your building envelope. It is the covering on the uppermost part of your building or shelter which provides protection from animals and weather, rain or snow notably, but heat also, wind and sunlight. The term denotes the framing or structure which helps that covering also.[1]The characteristics of the roof are centered upon the purpose of the building that it covers, the available roof covering materials and the neighborhood traditions of construction and wider concepts of architectural design and practice and could also be governed by local or national legislation. In most countries a roof protects generally against rain. A verandah might be roofed with materials that protects against sunshine but admits the other elements. The roof of a garden conservatory protects plants from cold, wind, and rain, but admits light.

In many parts of the globe ceramic tiles have been the predominant roofing materials for years and years, if not millennia. Other roofer materials include asphalt, coal tar pitch, EPDM rubber, Hypalon, polyurethane foam, PVC, slate, Teflon cloth, TPO, and lumber shingles and shakes.
The construction of a roof depends upon its method of support and the way the underneath space is bridged and whether or not the roof covering is pitched. The pitch is the viewpoint at which the roof increases from its lowest to highest point. Most US local architecture, except in very dried locations, has roofs that are sloped, or pitched. Although modern building elements such as drainpipes may take away the dependence on pitch, roofs are pitched for reasons of traditions and looks. So the pitch is dependent upon stylistic factors partly, and to do with practicalities partially.
Some types of roof, for example thatch, need a steep pitch to become waterproof and durable. Other styles of roofing, for example pantiles, are unstable on the steeply pitched roof but provide excellent weather protection at a relatively low angle. In parts where there is little rainwater, an almost toned roof with hook run-off provides satisfactory protection against an occasional downpour. Drainpipes take away the need for a sloping roof also.

Poorly covered and ventilated roofer can suffer from problems including the formation of snow dams throughout the overhanging eaves in winter, causing normal water from melted snow on upper parts of the roof top to penetrate the roofing material. Ice dams happen when temperature escapes through the uppermost area of the roof, and the snow at those true factors melts, refreezing as it drips along the shingles, and collecting in the form of ice at the lower points. This may bring about structural harm from stress, including the damage of drainage and gutter systems.
