A rooftop is part of a building envelope. It's the covering on the uppermost part of any building or shelter which provides protection from family pets and weather, rain or snow notably, but also heat, sunlight and wind. The term denotes the framing or structure which facilitates that covering also.[1]The characteristics of a roof are reliant upon the goal of the building so it protects, the available roof covering materials and the local traditions of construction and wider principles of architectural design and practice and could also be governed by local or countrywide legislation. In most countries a roof protects against rain primarily. A verandah may be roofed with material that protects against sunlight but admits the other elements. The roof of any garden conservatory protects plants from cold, wind, and rain, but admits light.

Other roofing materials include asphalt, coal tar pitch, EPDM silicone, Hypalon, polyurethane foam, PVC, slate, Teflon cloth, TPO, and real wood shakes and shingles.
The construction of a roof is determined by its method of support and the way the underneath space is bridged and set up roof is pitched. The pitch is the position at which the roof increases from its minimum to highest point. Most US home architecture, except in very dry locations, has roofs that are sloped, or pitched. Although modern engineering elements such as drainpipes may remove the need for pitch, roofs are pitched for reasons of tradition and aesthetics. So the pitch is dependent after stylistic factors partly, and partially to do with practicalities.
Some types of roof covering, for example thatch, need a steep pitch to become durable and waterproof. Other types of roofing, for example pantiles, are unstable on a steeply pitched roof but provide excellent weather protection at a comparatively low angle. In areas where there is little rainfall, an almost level roof with a slight run-off provides enough protection against an intermittent downpour. Drainpipes also take away the dependence on a sloping roof structure.
Somebody who specializes in roof structure construction is named a roofer.The durability of the roof is a subject of matter because the roofing is usually the least accessible part of your building for purposes of repair and renewal, while its harm or destruction can have serious effects.
Because the reason for a roof top is to protect people and their possessions from climatic elements, the insulating properties of the roof top are a concern in its structure and the decision of roofing materials.Some roof materials, those of natural fibrous material especially, such as thatch, have excellent insulating properties. For all those that not, extra insulation is installed under the exterior covering often. Cement tiles can be utilized as insulation. When installed giving a space between your tiles and the roof covering surface, it can reduce warming caused by sunlight.Types of insulation are sensed or clear plastic sheeting, sometimes with a reflective surface, installed below the tiles or other materials directly; synthetic foam batting laid above the ceiling and recycled paper products and other such materials that can be inserted or sprayed into roof cavities. So called Cool roofs have become increasingly popular, and in some instances are mandated by local codes. Cool roofs are defined as roofs with both high reflectivity and high thermal emittance.
Poorly insulated and ventilated roof covering can suffer from problems such as the formation of glaciers dams across the overhanging eaves in cold weather, causing normal water from melted snow on top elements of the roof structure to penetrate the roofing materials. Ice dams occur when temperature escapes through the uppermost part of the roof, and the snow at those true tips melts, refreezing as it drips across the shingles, and collecting in the form of ice at the low points. This may cause structural damage from stress, like the destruction of gutter and drainage systems.
