A roof structure is part of a building envelope. It is the covering on the uppermost part of the building or shelter which provides protection from pets and weather, notably rain or snow, but also heat, wind and sunlight. The word denotes the framing or composition which facilitates that covering also.[1]The characteristics of a roof are dependent upon the purpose of the building that it protects, the available roofer materials and the neighborhood traditions of structure and wider ideas of architectural design and practice and could also be governed by local or nationwide legislation. In most countries a roof protects against rain primarily. A verandah might be roofed with material that helps to protect against sun light but admits the other elements. The roof of an garden conservatory protects plants from cold, wind, and rain, but admits light.

In many elements of the global world ceramic tiles have been the predominant roofing material for centuries, if not millennia. Other roofer materials include asphalt, coal tar pitch, EPDM rubber, Hypalon, polyurethane foam, PVC, slate, Teflon textile, TPO, and hardwood shingles and shakes.
The construction of the roof is determined by its method of support and how the underneath space is bridged and whether or not the roof covering is pitched. The pitch is the perspective of which the roof goes up from its lowest to highest point. Most US local architecture, except in very dried up locations, has roofs that are sloped, or pitched. Although modern construction elements such as drainpipes might take away the dependence on pitch, roofs are pitched for reasons of traditions and appearance. So the pitch is partly dependent after stylistic factors, and partially to do with practicalities.
Some types of roof, for example thatch, require a steep pitch to become waterproof and durable. Other styles of roofing, for example pantiles, are unstable over a steeply pitched roof but provide excellent weather protection at a relatively low angle. In areas where there is little rainfall, an almost smooth roof with a slight run-off provides enough protection against an occasional downpour. Drainpipes also take away the need for a sloping roof.

So called Cool roofs have become more and more popular, and in some cases are mandated by local codes. Cool roofs are defined as roofs with both high reflectivity and high thermal emittance.
Poorly covered and ventilated roof can have problems with problems including the formation of glaciers dams around the overhanging eaves in cold weather, causing water from melted snow on top elements of the rooftop to permeate the roofing material. Ice dams happen when heat escapes through the uppermost area of the roof, and the snow at those points melts, refreezing as it drips along the shingles, and collecting by means of ice at the low points. This can bring about structural harm from stress, including the destruction of gutter and drainage systems.
