A roof covering is part of your building envelope. It's the covering on the uppermost part of any building or shelter which provides protection from pets or animals and weather, rain or snow notably, but also heat, sunlight and wind. The term also denotes the framing or structure which supports that covering.[1]The characteristics of the roof are centered upon the goal of the building it includes, the available roofer materials and the neighborhood traditions of development and wider principles of architectural design and practice and may also be governed by local or countrywide legislation. In most countries a roof protects against rain primarily. A verandah may be roofed with material that protects against sunlight but admits the other elements. The roof of any garden conservatory protects plants from cold, wind, and rain, but admits light.

In many parts of the earth ceramic tiles have been the predominant roof material for centuries, if not millennia. Other roof materials include asphalt, coal tar pitch, EPDM rubber, Hypalon, polyurethane foam, PVC, slate, Teflon textile, TPO, and solid wood shakes and shingles.
The construction of a roof depends upon its approach to support and how the underneath space is bridged and set up rooftop is pitched. The pitch is the viewpoint of which the roof rises from its lowest to highest point. Most US home architecture, except in very dried out areas, has roofs that are sloped, or pitched. Some types of roof, for example thatch, need a steep pitch in order to be durable and waterproof. In parts where there is little rain, an almost flat roof with hook run-off provides satisfactory protection against an intermittent downpour. Drainpipes also remove the dependence on a sloping roof.

So called Cool roofs have become popular ever more, and in some full cases are mandated by local codes. Cool roofs are defined as roofs with both high reflectivity and high thermal emittance.
Poorly covered and ventilated roofing can suffer from problems such as the formation of snow dams surrounding the overhanging eaves in winter, causing normal water from melted snow on top elements of the roof covering to penetrate the roofing material. Ice dams appear when heat escapes through the uppermost part of the roof, and the snow at those true factors melts, refreezing as it drips across the shingles, and collecting in the form of ice at the lower points. This may result in structural destruction from stress, including the damage of drainage and gutter systems.
