A roof top is part of any building envelope. It is the covering on the uppermost part of an building or shelter which provides protection from pets and weather, rain or snow notably, but also heat, wind and sunlight. The term also denotes the framing or structure which supports that covering.[1]The characteristics of the roof are reliant upon the goal of the building that this includes, the available roof materials and the local traditions of development and wider principles of architectural design and practice and could also be governed by local or countrywide legislation. In most countries a roof protects mainly against rain. A verandah may be roofed with material that protects against sunlight but admits the other elements. In many parts of the global world ceramic tiles have been the predominant roofer material for centuries, if not millennia. Other roof covering materials include asphalt, coal tar pitch, EPDM plastic, Hypalon, polyurethane foam, PVC, slate, Teflon fabric, TPO, and timber shakes and shingles.
The construction of any roof is determined by its method of support and how the underneath space is bridged and set up roofing is pitched. The pitch is the position at which the roof rises from its least expensive to highest point. Most US local architecture, except in very dry regions, has roofs that are sloped, or pitched. So the pitch is dependent upon stylistic factors partly, and partially to do with practicalities.
Some types of roof, for example thatch, require a steep pitch in order to be waterproof and durable. Other types of roofing, for example pantiles, are unstable over a steeply pitched roof but provide excellent weather protection at a relatively low angle. In parts where there is little rainwater, an almost toned roof with hook run-off provides enough protection against an intermittent downpour. Poorly protected and ventilated roofing can have problems with problems such as the formation of glaciers dams round the overhanging eaves in cold weather, causing drinking water from melted snow on higher elements of the rooftop to permeate the roofing materials. Ice dams occur when heating escapes through the uppermost part of the roof, and the snow at those true factors melts, refreezing as it drips along the shingles, and collecting by means of ice at the lower points. This may bring about structural damage from stress, like the damage of gutter and drainage systems.
