A rooftop is part of an building envelope. It's the covering on the uppermost part of the building or shelter which provides protection from animals and weather, rain or snow notably, but also heat, sunlight and wind. The word denotes the framing or structure which helps that covering also.[1]The characteristics of a roof are dependent upon the purpose of the building so it protects, the available roofing materials and the neighborhood traditions of construction and wider ideas of architectural design and practice and may also be governed by local or national legislation. In most countries a roof protects against rain primarily. A verandah might be roofed with material that protects against natural light but admits the other elements. The roof of a garden conservatory protects plants from cold, wind, and rain, but admits light.

In many parts of the planet ceramic tiles have been the predominant roofing materials for centuries, if not millennia. Other roof covering materials include asphalt, coal tar pitch, EPDM plastic, Hypalon, polyurethane foam, PVC, slate, Teflon textile, TPO, and hardwood shakes and shingles.
The construction of a roof is determined by its approach to support and how the underneath space is bridged and whether or not the roof structure is pitched. The pitch is the perspective at which the roof goes up from its minimum to highest point. Most US domestic structures, except in very dried up areas, has roofs that are sloped, or pitched. Although modern engineering elements such as drainpipes might remove the dependence on pitch, roofs are pitched for reasons of tradition and looks. So the pitch is partly dependent upon stylistic factors, also to do with practicalities partially.
Some types of roofer, for example thatch, require a steep pitch in order to be waterproof and durable. Other types of roofing, for example pantiles, are unstable on a steeply pitched roof but provide excellent weather protection at a relatively low angle. In parts where there is little rainfall, an almost chiseled roof with hook run-off provides adequate protection against an occasional downpour. Drainpipes take away the dependence on a sloping roofing also.
A person that specializes in roof covering construction is called a roofer.The durability of any roof top is a subject of matter because the roof structure is usually the least accessible part of your building for purposes of repair and renewal, while its devastation or damage can have serious effects.
Because the purpose of a roofing is to protect people and their possessions from climatic elements, the insulating properties of a roof structure are a consideration in its framework and the decision of roofing materials.Some roofer materials, those of natural fibrous material particularly, such as thatch, have excellent insulating properties. For all those that do not, extra insulation is often installed under the outside covering. In developed countries, the majority of dwellings have a ceiling installed under the structural members of the roof. The purpose of a ceiling is to insulate against temperature and cold, noise, mud and frequently from the droppings and lice of birds who frequently choose roofs as nesting places.
Concrete tiles can be utilized as insulation. When installed going out of a space between the tiles and the roof top surface, it can reduce home heating caused by the sun.Forms of insulation are plastic or thought sheeting, sometimes with a reflective surface, installed below the tiles or other material straight; synthetic foam batting laid above the ceiling and recycled paper products and other such materials that may be inserted or sprayed into roof cavities. So called Cool roofs are becoming increasingly popular, and sometimes are mandated by local codes. Cool roofs are thought as roofs with both high reflectivity and high thermal emittance.
Poorly insulated and ventilated roofer can suffer from problems such as the formation of glaciers dams throughout the overhanging eaves in cold weather, causing water from melted snow on upper parts of the roofing to permeate the roofing material. Ice dams take place when temperature escapes through the uppermost area of the roof, and the snow at those tips melts, refreezing as it drips across the shingles, and collecting by means of ice at the lower points. This can cause structural harm from stress, including the devastation of gutter and drainage systems.
